Nanny rebate meeting with Tony Abbott

Since I moved to Australia to launch KiwiOz Childcare in Sydney I have spoken to so many families and nannies who would welcome the childcare rebate being extended to nannies.

I've become a supporter of the cause and last month I was proud to become one of the founding committee members of the newly formed Australian Nanny Association. The ANA has been launched to provide support to nannies and families, improve the professional profile of the industry, and fight to give parents the option to use their childcare rebate towards the cost of a nanny.

On the 27th of June ANA spokesperson Annemarie Sansom and I were invited to attend a roundtable meeting with Tony Abbott to discuss flexibility of care in Australia and the role that nannies could play to support Australian families.

We were joined by senior representatives from all sectors of the childcare community and spent two hours discussing current issues and how we could work together to provide a better care environment for children.

We were pleased to be given the opportunity to put our view across and answer questions from Mr Abbot and others about nannies.

We believe parents should have the choice to use the nanny rebate in either childcare centres or in home based care, and made it clear that most nannies and agencies would welcome more direction and government guidelines in order to provide structured in home care.

I was able to explain how the current system works in New Zealand- how companies such as KiwiOz Childcare NZ administer the scheme on behalf of the Ministry of Education, and how nannies are monitored in home by qualified child carers and follow the national curriculum.

To help us maintain pressure please support our cause by signing up to the ANA mailing list. We will keep you informed on progress and here's hoping in home childcare will be more affordable in Australia in future!
