Happy nanny = happy kids!
Recently we've been getting lots of feedback from our nannies about what makes them happy and not so happy in their roles!
Here are a few tips for the parents out there who may or may not have thought of these small things which make a big difference in a nannies day:
- be punctual. it's expected that the nanny is punctual so please give reciprocal respect and arrive home/ let them finish work on time.
- even if the you are on holiday, the nanny is still at work. Taking your nanny to an exotic location and staying in a nice house does not equal a holiday for your nanny. In fact many of our nannies report having to work longer hours with little extra pay in this scenario. If your nanny is travelling with you they should be compensated at a good rate for their time. They are being pulled away from their own life to work for you and their time should be paid for.
- tidy up! Many a nannies first complaint is that Mum and Dad leave the dishes from last night to them to clean up, expect them to wash and iron their clothes and bedsheets or generally leave the house in a mess expecting nanny to clean up. This isn't fair- a nanny is there to care for the children and not for you! Most nannies are willing to go over and above the call of duty with this but there is no doubt they will secretly be feeling taken advantage of.
Finally, some notes from the nannies on what makes a great nanny family:
- accept the nanny as a part of your family
- trust and respect the nanny to do the right thing
- respect the right to privacy, the nannies quarters should be strictly out of bounds
- let the nanny know your discipline strategy and back her up when needed
